Montagu Slater (1902-1956), English writer who had met Britten while working for the GPO Film Unit in the mid-1930s. He was later the librettist of Peter Grimes, op. 33.
The work was performed only once during the composer's lifetime, under the title 'Temporal suite for oboe and piano'.
